Speaking at the historic Kalayaan Hall in Club Filipino, Greenhills, San Juan City, on the 40th day of the death of his mother, former president Corazon Aquino, the 49 year old senator made the much awaited announcement, which he said was in answer to people's plea for him to join the 2010 presidential race.
"Tinatanggap ko ang hiling ng sambayanan. Tinatanggap ko rin po ang bilin at habilin, tagubilin ng aking mga magulang. Tinatanggap ko ang responsibilidad na ituloy ang laban para sa bayan. Tinatanggap ko ang hamong mamuno sa labang ito. Bayang Pilipinas, tatakbo ako sa pagka-pangulo sa darating na halalan,"
(Translated: "I am accepting the responsibility to continue this nation's fight. I am accepting the challenge to lead this fight. I am running for the presidency in the coming election,")
Among his agenda if elected president, Aquino vows to go after Marcos wealth saying he would use "political will" to go after the fabulous wealth of the Marcos family, which some estimates have placed at $10 billion.
Ruling coalition secretary general Gabriel Claudio said "We're happy for him. We congratulate his declaration on his bid to run for president under the Liberal Party banner. We wish him well. We know he has good intentions."
The Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC), headed by businessman Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco (Noynoy's uncle), said the senator's entry in the presidential race is not a threat to it own bet, which will either be Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero or Senator Loren Legarda.
Meanwhile, Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay hinted at the strong possibility that former President Joseph Estrada will give way to Senator Aquino's candidacy.
If elected, Aquino will become the country's 15th President.
"I want to make democracy work not only for the rich and the well connected but for everyone,"
